W Prague, formerly the Grand Hotel Evropa, is one of Prague’s great Art Nouveau landmarks. Its spectacular historic dining room, with ornate decoration, stained glass and elaborate detailing, is said to have inspired the grand dining-room interiors seen in James Cameron’s Titanic. Located on Wenceslas Square, the hotel remains an extraordinary example of Prague’s elegant early-20th-century architecture.
The history of the art nouveau movement and the beauty of this room captivated me as I it did James Cameron when he visited. It’s so extraordinary modern elegant and some of the features could pass for a room designed today. I loved the attention to detail but also the minimalist aesthetic which creates an elegant experience. For me it was a blend of old castle and modern industrialism. In this way the room represents the best of old and new ideas when blended.
